Over 50+ people attend New Windsor NARCAN Training

New Windsor, NY – Yesterday the Town of New Windsor hosted a free NARCAN training for the community with over 50 people receiving the training during two sessions.

The training was put on with the help of a state grant, at no cost to taxpayers or attendees. All attendees received an hour of training and a free NARCAN “overdose rescue kit” to take home with them.

The training comes on the heels of the Surgeon General’s most recent advisory on Naloxone and Opioid Overdose stating this public health emergency calls for the general public to be involved, “knowing how to use naloxone and keeping it within reach can save a life.”

This training meets the Surgeon General’s advisory and seeks to ensure its mission of “Be prepared. Get Naloxone. Save a life.”

Naloxone (known as NARCAN) has been fundamental in the efforts to decrease rates of fatal overdoses. The training received taught first responders, likely opioid overdose witnesses and community members to understand, recognize, respond to and reverse opioid overdoses using a naloxone rescue kit.

Supervisor George Green stated, “The Town of New Windsor considers the heroin and opioid epidemic a public health emergency. We felt it was critical to offer training to the community so that they could meet the Surgeon General’s call to be prepared to provide lifesaving assistance to a potential overdose victim. I am happy to see over 50 people attended this training and are now on the front lines of fighting this scourge in our community.”
